Day 17 – The Drive To South Dakota

Ok, I’ve had a few beers. Let’s see how this goes.

Today was the second leg of the “lets get to Mount Rushmore” drive. Shorter than yesterday, but still close to 500 miles. Weather was all over the place. Sunny, overcast, rainy, gusts of 40 MPH, snow in the Black Hills. Not snow that was already on the ground … falling snow … snowflakes popping off the windshield snow. That’s a new one for me: snow on May 22nd.

Got to Keystone around 3:30 (just outside Mount Rushmore; we purposely didn’t drive by the monument; we’re going tomorrow morning). A few months ago I took a gamble and booked us in a place called “The Holy Smoke Resort”—little single cabins in the woods just off the beaten path. You never know with these places. But I’ve gotta say … this place is pretty cool. I’m sitting here writing this in my rustic cabin with giant four poster beds made out of giant logs … hardwood everything … but it also has a fridge, microwave, wifi … the whole deal.

The gamble paid off! I just may have one more beer.

Laura, I thought you left your “Howdy partner” days back at the Arby’s in Millburn. The cabins look cozy. I see a trip to Cabela’s for new bedroom furniture coming. I was confused with the cabin name Vulcan? I think McCoy would be a better choice. The camp map is worth the trip!
