Day 10 – California Coast and Hearst Castle

(Post by Max)

Since we were staying in the Santa Barbara area for the day we decided to take a trip up to Hearst Castle. The drive there along Highway 101 and 1 were amazing. All along the ocean with pull offs almost every mile. We decided to pull off at one and walk along the cliff sides. We even saw a beautiful white crane! Once we arrived at the visitor center for Hearst Castle we took a 15 minute bus tour up to the house. The pure opulence of the house was astounding. So much money spent to build this house that he might have used half the year. The views though were breathtaking, you could really see why he decided to place his home here. Ceilings, floors and statues from everywhere from Italy to France to Egypt.

On the way back we stopped to view the elephant seals on their beach. They were molting but the sounds they make were strange and low. Pictures truly do the beach more justice than I can say. The we stopped in Pismo Beach for diner at Wolley’s. Delicious beach side restaurant with an open front leading right out to the beach.

We returned to Guy’s house for more hockey! The interactions again between my Dad and Guy are fantastic you can see that they are really great friends and no matter how long they go between meetings they pick right back up. You could tell my Dad really enjoyed the extra time he got to spend with Guy. He even talked about coming back out with Jimmy, Tommy, Jack and himself for a Hockey House reunion.

So glad you got to Hearst castle it’s unbelievable

Great photos, great location! My assessment is that as a man cave Hearst was a bit over the top. Aside from the cliched appearance of wealth it is an awesome place with a lot of truly historic stuff. The view, did I mention the view, is all that!
